Watermelon is an important commodity in South Carolina where they call it the ‘smile fruit’ for obvious reasons: a watermelon slice looks like a smile and creates smiles too! And there’s no doubt that it was smiles all around at the 44th meeting of the South Carolina Watermelon Association. Held January 15th to the 17th at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, the event also featured an annual auction that raises funds for research and watermelon promotion.

The event offered a weekend full of educational sessions and a chance for producers, retailors and accompanying industry members to come together, to network and to celebrate South Carolina’s watermelon industry and the hard work of the association. In addition to the event’s annual auction, attendees also got to enjoy the crowning of the 2016 South Carolina Watermelon Queen.

We’d like to take this moment to offer congratulations to everyone in South Carolina’s proud ag industry.
