Looking at the numbers, a common Virginia slogan should be “Virginia is for agriculture lovers.” Virginia is a southern state with a diverse offering of mountainous regions, major cities and coastline. With a very temperate climate, major ports and a location between the north and the south, Virginia is a prime ag location.
AgAmerica Recipes: Red Chili Con Carne
Few dishes are as universally popular as chili, and this “Red Chili Con Carne” from Forrest Pritchard’s new book, Growing Tomorrow: A Farm-to-Table Journey, brings together the best in produce and protein! Going back to the roots of the dish, who better to offer culinary advice on these farm recipes than the growers themselves? This recipe requires a few basic ingredients and your choice of ground meat to whip up a culinary delight.
You’re likely to find little ghosts and Ghoulies on your front porch this Halloween, begging for candy and sweets and threatening shenanigans if their sugary demands aren’t met. You expect to find such tricks and hijinks at Halloween, but you shouldn’t experience similar tricks from your farm lending company. If AgAmerica Lending is your source for ag loan products and farm lending, then the fact that you’ll get no tricks, only treats, is one you can take to the bank.
AgAmerica Lending loved showing off some local talent at this year’s Sunbelt Ag Expo. We brought some of our own ag heritage with a group of whip crackers; it’s a rodeo art that involves the use of one or two whips to perform routines, make rhythms with the whip cracks and perform stunts like popping balloons and snuffing out candles. It arose out of Florida’s beef cattle industry, whereby Florida cattlemen would use whips to herd beef cattle on drives across the state. It’s a proud part of the Florida agriculture heritage.
AgAmerica Recipes: Chocolate Avocado Mousse
You know you’re supposed to get near a ‘bushel and a peck’ worth of fruits and vegetable servings every day for good nutrition, and this delectable Chocolate Avocado Mousse with grapefruit will definitely help you to get a few in! (The chocolate doesn’t hurt either.)
AgAmerica Recipes: Honey-Orange Drumsticks
There’s no finer way to honor agriculture’s fruits (and vegetables!) of labor than with a really tasty farm recipe; double points if you’re using nutritional produce you grew yourself or bought from a Farmers’ Market. Renowned sustainable farmer and author, Forrest Pritchard, knows some of the best recipes out there using nutritional produce, and he’s included some of the most delectable in his new book, Growing Tomorrow: A Farm-to-Table Journey.
They say that competition makes you faster, but collaboration makes you better. Such is the case between whip cracking champions Cameron Cato and Ryan Waldman. Whip cracking is a pretty small world no matter where you are, and it didn’t take long before these two young men—only a year apart in age—met each other in competition. They’ll both be performing on stage at the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, GA this October 20-22. There are many similarities between the two, but the biggest is the fact that meeting each other—and other whip crackers—has only made them better.
Agriculture supplies the clothing, materials and food needed to live our lives, and we’d be fibbing if we didn’t admit that we’re quite partial to the edible portions of ag. But what do farm lending and food have in common? The answer: Our passion for both of them! And, it would seem we’re not alone, if the excitement building for Forrest Pritchard’s second book, Growing Tomorrow: A Farm-to-Table Journey, is any indication. Luckily, we’ll all get to find out more when Pritchard joins us at the AgAmerica Lending booth during the Sunbelt Ag Expo, and for his daily presentations at the Hoss Tools Sustainable Living Center this October 20-22.
