Held in Rosedale, Virginia, at the Stuart Land and Cattle Company, it was a fruitful day of information, meetings, and industry awards for area beef producers. Virginia offers abundant forage resources, and its countryside is well-suited for beef production, according to the Virginia Cooperative Extension. The state focuses primarily on cow-calf operations, with most feeder calves eventually being sold west to grow and mature. Virginia ranks around the 20th position in the country, based on heads of beef cattle.
Cattle Field Day for the Virginia Cattle Industry
The Virginia Cattlemen’s Association Cattle Field Day began at 10 a.m. with registration. Attendees were able to participate in continuous tours of the Stuart Land and Cattle Company’s operation, via bus, running from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The ranch comprises over 16,000 acres, and it is the oldest cattle ranch still in operation in the entire country. The same 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. time slot also featured a trade show, where beef industry merchants and suppliers set up booths showcasing their goods and services.
Participants were able to enjoy lunch anywhere between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., though certain membership meetings and industry award ceremonies were held at 12:00. There was also a brief VCA membership meeting with voting on new policies. The field day was wrapped up by about 3:00 p.m., and members of the Virginia cattle industry were on their way back home to their Virginia ranches and farms, armed with knowledge gained from the exclusive tour and networking with fellow cattlemen and cattlewomen.
