Spring Has Sprung – Farmers Prepare for the Year Ahead
Discover five steps farmers should take in the springtime to prepare their operations for success.
Although farmers don’t have an “off” season, springtime is when the work really ramps up for the year. In honor of the start of spring, here are a few things farmers are typically doing as they welcome the season:
- Before planting begins, farmers must prepare their soil. Usually this involves making sure the land is smooth and easy to work with, collecting samples in order to test the soil’s pH and nutrient levels, and tilling the land.
- Growers must determine what they will plant. This requires looking at fixed and variable costs as well as current prices and price outlooks for each commodity, and then order the necessary seeds. It’s also a good time to decide which fertilizers and pest repellants will be needed to ensure a strong, successful growing season.
- Farmers should take the time to carefully examine their farm equipment and handle any repairs or routine, preventative maintenance services needed. Those who have major repairs to complete should consider hiring an agricultural mechanic, keeping in mind that hiring a professional can be an investment in the entire operation: Equipment in tip-top shape can boost productivity throughout the planting season.
- For those with livestock, spring is an ideal time to clean any shelters and guarantee each animal is healthy. The animals’ inoculations should be up to date, and they should be examined by a veterinarian if possible.
- Weather is obviously unpredictable (and constantly subject to change), but it doesn’t hurt to consult The Old Farmer’s Almanac and examine long-range weather forecasts.
