Although farmers don’t have an “off” season, springtime is when the work really ramps up for the year. In honor of the start of spring, here are a few things farmers are typically doing as they welcome the season:

• Before planting begins, farmers must prepare their soil. Usually this involves making sure the land is smooth and easy to work with, collecting samples in order to test the soil’s pH and nutrient levels, and tilling the land.
• Growers must determine what they will plant. This requires looking at fixed and variable costs as well as current prices and price outlooks for each commodity, and then order the necessary seeds. It’s also a good time to decide which fertilizers and pest repellants will be needed to ensure a strong, successful growing season.
• Farmers should take the time to carefully examine their farm equipment and handle any repairs or routine, preventative maintenance services needed.
