Brian Philpot Instructs and Learns as Guest Lecturer at Texas A&M
AgAmerica Lending President Brian Philpot is set to guest lecture at Texas A&M this March 9th.
Agriculture education has never been more important with the world’s population growing and the average age of America’s principal farm operators moving closer towards retirement. Sharing knowledge of agriculture and related financial topics has long been a focus of Texas A&M’s John Penson, the Agricultural Economics professor who invited AgAmerica Lending President Brian Philpot to share his knowledge as a Texas A&M guest lecturer on March 9th.
John Penson and Ag Education
Penson’s long history of having an impact on both the agricultural industry and education is impressive. According to his biography, “his research efforts have focused on the relationship between the general economy and the nation’s food and fiber industry.” As a result, Penson has won numerous awards, such as the Distinguished Achievement Award in Research at the university level, awarded by the Association of Former Students at Texas A&M University, and Distinguished Teaching Awards, awarded from both the American Agricultural Economics Association and the Western Agricultural Economics Association.
Penson has authored or co-authored a number of textbooks. According to Penson’s bio, the 6th edition of the textbook, “Introduction to Agricultural Economics,” by Penson, Capps, Rosson and Woodward, is used by agriculture students at more than 60 U.S. and foreign universities. His influence is world-wide as Penson has taught agricultural economics courses in South America, participated in the Foreign Distinguished Professor Program at Korea University, and presently teaches a graduate course in Guatemala.
Texas A&M Guest Lecturer Brian Philpot
As the President of one of the nation’s largest agricultural lenders, Brian Philpot brings extensive real estate know-how and an entrepreneurial spirit to the university classroom. Philpot founded AgAmerica in 2009 in the hopes of modernizing agricultural lending for the nation’s farmers and ranchers.
During his lecture at Texas A&M, Philpot will share his unique perspective on both the current ag real estate debt market and the strategic importance of infrastructure development (cellular towers, solar and wind farms) to the economic health of rural America.
“I’m honored by Dr. Penson’s invitation to speak to his class of future ag industry leaders. Exposing them to the unique financial challenges modern-day farmers face is an important endeavor. Selfishly too, I’m hoping to get input on what knowledge and skills these students seek to help them grow and succeed.”
