A Look at Virginia Dairy Farms and the Dairymen’s Association Dairy Expo
Operators of Virginia dairy farms will be heading to the State Dairymen’s Association Dairy Expo in mid-July.
July 14th will see the operators of Virginia dairy farms traveling to Stoney Run Farms in McGaheysville, Virginia for the Virginia State Dairymen’s Association (VSDA) Dairy Expo. The day is one of fellowship and learning for the dairy producers in the state. Explore the offerings of the event below.
Virginia Dairy Farms by the Numbers
According to information compiled by the VSDA and the American Dairy Association of Virginia, the state is 24th in the country for milk production and 23rd in the number of dairy cows. As of 2015, there were 608 Virginia dairy farms with a total of 90,000 dairy cows that produced 205 million gallons of milk that year. All told, cash receipts for the sale of milk equaled $317 million.
Information on the VSDA’s Dairy Expo
The Dairy Expo runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stoney Run Farms, one of the state’s “premier dairy farms,” according to the VSDA. The farm itself is a fourth-generation dairy farm, though it’s roots go back to the 1800s when it was a crop farm. The operation started milking 50 cows in 1950, and they currently milk 2,200 dairy cows three times a day in 72-stall rotary parlor. Three different generations currently work the farm.
Throughout the day, vendors and industry groups will offer demonstrations around Stoney Run Farms dairy as educational exhibitions for attending dairy farmers. The event also features a free barbecue lunch and the opportunity for the men and women of Virginia’s dairy industry to visit with each other, share, and network.
