USDA News You Can Use: Grants for Improving Agriculture

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is committed to improving the agriculture industry in the United States. At any given time, they offer a great number of grants and funding to help those in the ag industry to expand their operations, solve a pest or disease problem, complete a conservation project, move into new products and produce, and more. See the latest news coming out of the USDA on grants to improve agriculture in the U.S.

The USDA works in close tandem with the country’s premier universities and colleges with esteemed agriculture programs. In early May, the USDA announced $15.6 million in grants has been awarded to the nation’s schools to promote research, education, and extension programs that focus on topics like economic growth, sustainability, and rural community development; the end focus is to increase prosperity in rural America. The USDA has announced $44 million in funding to those in the ag industry—farmers, ranchers, and businesses—for The Value-Added Producer Grant program. The program helps producers to increase the value of their products, expand markets and customer bases, and strengthens rural communities. The latest grants focus on developing new bio-based products and expanding markets for such products. Read more here.

Improving agriculture also includes improving sustainable crop and livestock production methods so that the country’s producers can see higher yields. The USDA announced the awarding of $16.5 million in grants to promote research into options for increasing ag productivity and improving food security in a landscape filled with diseases, pests, and a varying climate. They also announced the next round of similar grants will focus on pollinator health and plant/animal phenomics (the physical and biochemical traits of organisms) research. Read more here.
