Youth in Ag: Upcoming FFA and Youth Livestock Shows

See which youth livestock shows are coming up in 2020.

Our youth are the future of agriculture, and participation in the Future Farmers of America, or FFA, and other youth ag organizations is an important part of agriculture. These programs encourage our young people to get involved in agriculture and to learn the ins and outs of the industry. Youth livestock shows provide the opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of different livestock. Explore youth livestock shows that are coming up in the Southeast below.

Upcoming Youth Livestock Shows

The majority of youth livestock shows are held at local and state levels in conjunction with colleges and universities that offer agriculture coursework. Open to youth up to age 19, youth livestock shows allow competitors to exhibit many different kinds of animals. Upcoming shows include:

FFA and Livestock Shows in Florida:

A variety of FFA evaluation events are planned during the Florida State Fair starting on February 8. Events include the State Horse Evaluation, the State Livestock Evaluation, the State Dairy Evaluation, and the State Fair Poultry Evaluation Event.

Youth Livestock Shows in Georgia:

The Georgia National Livestock Show is slated for February 19-23. The event is put on in conjunction with the Georgia 4-H, Georgia FFA, and The Rhodes Animal & Dairy Science Department of the University of Georgia. Events include showing livestock like beef and dairy cows, goats, sheep, and hogs.

Youth Livestock Shows in Louisiana:

The 2020 Jr. Livestock Show will take place on January 17-18, in West Monroe, Louisiana. The event is held in cooperation with the North Louisiana Agri-Business Council, the LSU AgCenter, and Louisiana Tech University Block & Bridle Club. Events include livestock like lambs and sheep, beef and dairy cattle, swine, and goats.

The Value of Participation in Youth Livestock Shows

Youth ag shows offer a variety of benefits for participants. In order to be involved in shows, participants must plan, create budgets, procure feed and livestock healthcare, manage paperwork, follow rules and regulations, and more. This helps prepare youth participants for the day-to-day tasks of working in agriculture.

Additionally, youth organizations like FFA and 4-H, and school-based ag programs, can also introduce agriculture to young people who have no background or prior experience in agriculture. This broadens the pool of people who will have the potential and desire to work in agriculture in the future.
