Thanksgiving 2018 Made Possible by U.S. Farmers

Hard-working farmers produce crops for a happy Thanksgiving

On Thursday, November 22, 2018, families, friends, and neighbors will join together to enjoy a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner in dining rooms across the nation.

For many, the 2018 Thanksgiving table will include Thanksgiving favorites like farm-raised turkey, sweet potatoes, and cranberry sauce, all of which are produced right here in the U.S. by hard-working farmers. Turkeys, for example, are primarily raised in Minnesota, North Carolina, Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, and Virginia. Wisconsin is the leading producer of cranberries, producing 62 percent of the U.S. crop in 2017.

Wondering how much that farm-to-family turkey will cost you? According to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 32nd annual price survey of classic items served on Thanksgiving, 16-pound turkeys were $22.38 in 2017, making the average per pound cost of turkey at roughly $1.40 – a decrease of 2 cents per pound, or a total of 32 cents per 16-pound whole turkey, compared to 2016.

A lower-priced turkey leads to a more affordable dinner, with the annual cost of Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people coming in at $49.12 in 2017, a 75-cent decrease from 2016’s average of $49.87. That means the average cost of Thanksgiving dinner per person in 2017 was just under $5 – not bad, right?
